Simons attended Edgewater High School in Orlando, Florida, and later transferred to Montverde Academy for his junior year. He returned to Edgewater for his senior year, deciding to forgo college basketball for a year to improve his draft stock. He graduated from Edgewater in 2017 and went on to attend IMG Academy in Bradenton for a post-graduation year in 2018.

In 2017, he played for the United States men’s national under-19 team before bypassing college and entering the 2018 NBA Draft.
