She was born on October 25, 1989, in Canberra, Australian Capital Territory, Australia. Her mother, Marzena Wasikowska, is a Polish-born photographer, while her father, John Reid, is an Australian photographer and collagist. She has an older sister named Jess, and a younger brother named Kai. She attended Cook Primary School, Ainslie Primary School and Canberra High School, and Karabar High School in Queanbeyan, which neighbors Canberra.

Mia began studying ballet with Jackie Hallahan at the Canberra Dance Development Centre. Her parents are working in the Arts industries thus, during her childhood she would frequently appear on their gallery. Mia reprised the same role in the fantasy film Alice Through the Looking Glass. Mia played the titular character in Cary Fukunaga’s adaptation of Jane Eyre. She starred opposite Michael Fassbender. In the movie Restless, she played the role of a terminally ill sixteen-year-old, which required her to chop her long hair.

Along with acting, Mia has also appeared in Miu Miu’s spring 2012 fashion campaign. She was featured on the cover panel of the Vanity Fair Hollywood Issue. Mia added one more feather in her career by making her directorial debut on a segment of a film adaptation of The Turning, a collection of short stories by Australian author Tim Winton. Also, she appeared in the Netflix psychological thriller The Devil All The Time as Helen Hatton.

She was in a relationship with Jesse Eisenberg, her co-star in The Double, from 2013 to 2015. Apart from this, Mia remained in the relationship with Robert Pattinson from 2017-2018. However, at the moment she seems single now.
