Matt Grzelcyk

Matthew Grzelcyk, born on January 5, 1994, in Boston, Massachusetts, is an accomplished American professional ice hockey player. He is the son of John and Kathleen Grzelcyk and grew up in Charlestown alongside his three older siblings: brothers John Jr. and Andrew, and sister Julie. Raised in a family passionate about hockey, Matt’s early exposure to the sport laid the foundation for his successful career. He attended Belmont Hill School and later graduated from Boston University, where he played for the university’s hockey team from 2012 to 2016.

Career Journey

Matt’s passion for hockey was evident from a young age. His talent earned him a spot on the Boston University team, where he made an immediate impact and was named to the Hockey East All-Freshman Team in 2012. Although selected for the preliminary roster of the 2013 World Juniors, he did not make the final cut.

In April 2016, Matt signed a two-year entry-level contract with the Boston Bruins, starting with the 2016-2017 season. He initially joined the team’s affiliate, the Providence Bruins, on an Amateur Tryout Agreement. His NHL debut came on December 14, 2016, during a game against the Pittsburgh Penguins. On November 22, 2017, Matt recorded his first NHL point with an assist on a goal by teammate Jake DeBrusk in a game against the New Jersey Devils. Just two days later, he celebrated his first NHL victory against the Pittsburgh Penguins.

He played a key role in helping the team qualify for the 2019 Stanley Cup Finals, though he suffered a head injury after a collision with Oskar Sundqvist of the St. Louis Blues during the series.
