In 2015, Fernando joined the Chicago White Sox as an international free agent. A year later, he was traded to the San Diego Padres in exchange for James Shields. He made his mark by playing 55 games in the Rookie-level Arizona League, recording a .273 batting average, four home runs, and 25 RBIs.

The following year, Fernando excelled with the Fort Wayne TinCaps in the Class A Midwest League and later with the San Antonio Missions in the Class AA Texas League. Across 117 games, he posted a .278 batting average, 22 home runs, 75 RBIs, and 32 stolen bases.

Injuries and Comeback

Despite his rise in 2018 as one of the top minor league players, Fernando’s season was cut short after suffering a broken left thumb and ligament damage, necessitating surgery. However, he made a successful return for the winter season with Estrellas Orientales.
