Buddy Hield is a young Bahamian professional basketball player who plays for the Golden State Warriors of the National Basketball Association. He has won many trophies for his teams, like the John R. Wooden Award, Naismith Award, Sporting News Player of the Year, and Oscar Robertson Trophy.
Buddy Hield found himself in the spotlight on February 28, 2021, during his 350th NBA game. That night, he broke the record for the fastest player to hit 1,000 three-pointers, passing Stephen Curry’s mark of 369 games. His achievement made headlines and stirred debate among fans and analysts.
Buddy Hield was born on December 17, 1992, as Chavano Rainier Hield in Freeport in the West Grand Bahama district in the Bahamas. Buddy is the son of Vincent Hield and Jackie Swann. His parents divorced when he was young, and he went to live with his grandmother along with his six siblings. While Buddy was young, he got his high school education from the “Sunrise Christian Academy” in Bel’ Aire, Kansas, and graduated from his college in the year 2016 in Oklahoma
Buddy Hield started his college basketball career at Oklahoma by scoring 7.8 points per game as a freshman and earning the team’s Most Inspirational Award. As a sophomore, he stepped up his game, averaging 16.5 points, 4.4 rebounds, and 1.4 steals, which earned him a spot on the All-Big 12 second team.
Before his junior year, he improved his defense and became a stronger three-point shooter. He averaged 17.4 points and 5.4 rebounds that season while leading his team to the Sweet 16 with a 24–11 record.
Instead of joining the 2015 NBA draft, he came back for his senior year. That decision paid off as he became Big 12 Player of the Year and a First Team All-Big 12 pick. Fans and experts took notice when he scored a career-high 46 points in a triple-overtime game against Kansas.
He later made the midseason Naismith Trophy watchlist and won the John R. Wooden Award. During his senior season, he averaged 25 points, 5.7 rebounds, and two assists, leading the nation in three-point shots.
Buddy Hield began his NBA journey in 2016 with the New Orleans Pelicans, where he earned Rookie of the Month honors and impressed with his scoring. After a mid-season trade in 2017, he joined the Sacramento Kings, scored a career-high 30 points against the Suns, and made the NBA All-Rookie First Team.
In 2018–19, he broke records for three-pointers, including passing Peja Stojaković for most in a season for the Kings. He later signed a four-year contract extension and scored a career-high 42 points in 2020, dedicating the performance to Kobe Bryant. That same season, he won the NBA Three-Point Contest.
In 2021, Hield became the fastest player to hit 1,000 threes in league history at that time. He moved to the Indiana Pacers in 2022 and later broke Reggie Miller’s record for most threes in a season for the franchise. In 2024, he joined the 76ers, where he played in 84 games, the most in the league, and averaged 12.1 points per game.
After a six-team trade, Hield landed with the Golden State Warriors. In his first two games, he scored a combined 49 points and made 12 three-pointers, setting a new NBA record for most threes in a player’s first two games with a team.
In 2014, Buddy Hield played for the Bahamas National Team in the Centrobasket tournament held in Tepic, Mexico. He competed from August 1 to August 7 under coach Larry Eustachy. During the tournament, Buddy led all players by averaging 19.8 points per game.
