Career
Steve Spagnuolo began his professional coaching career in 1999 as the linebackers and defensive backs coach for the Philadelphia Eagles. He worked with the Eagles for nearly eight years, gaining significant experience. In January 2007, he was hired by the New York Giants as their defensive coordinator under head coach Tom Coughlin. After a successful season, he signed a lucrative three-year contract in February 2008, making him one of the highest-paid defensive coordinators in the NFL at the time, with a reported value of around $2 million annually. Following the 2008 season, Spagnuolo joined the St. Louis Rams with a four-year, $11.5 million contract. Unfortunately, the Rams suffered a dismal 1-15 season in 2009, marking their worst record in franchise history. Though the team showed some improvement in 2010, Spagnuolo was fired in 2012 after another disappointing season.
Spagnuolo briefly coached the New Orleans Saints, where the team set an NFL record for most yards allowed in a single season, leading to his dismissal in 2013. He then joined the Baltimore Ravens as a senior defensive assistant in 2013, and after a year, was promoted to secondary coach in 2014. In 2015, Spagnuolo returned to the New York Giants as defensive coordinator and later served as interim head coach for two seasons. However, he was not retained by the team in 2018. In 2019, he was hired as the defensive coordinator for the Kansas City Chiefs, where he helped the team win Super Bowl LIV, marking his second championship as a coach.
Controversies
Throughout his career, Spagnuolo has faced criticism for poor team performance, particularly during his tenure with the New Orleans Saints and St. Louis Rams. Despite these challenges, he has managed to maintain a successful career and has largely avoided major controversies. Anonymous sources have criticized him, but these issues have not significantly impacted his career trajectory.
